How was Social Media used to progress the democratic process in the Middle East?

There have purportedly been stories describing that when Twitter was shut down in Egypt, the mobile app of Twitter dashboards were used to get the Twitter messages out to the free world. This is an example of utilizing the many channels of communication available in Social Media to assist political, man-made, and natural disasters. Were there other examples?
